Not much has changed in the last few months, as global economies continue to struggle amid growing and stubbornly persistent uncertainty. Devastating risks to the North American economies do not appear to be imminent, but some risks do remain on the horizon in the near term.
Paul Edelstein, Director of North American Financial Economics, will discuss the outlook for the US economy, markets, and Fed policy. The recent disappointing jobs report was a jolt to markets at a time when the Eurozone debt crisis seems to be coming to a head. The Fed is taking the news in stride and is not likely to take drastic stimulus measures at the upcoming meeting. Can the economy deliver enough growth to bring down unemployment? Will the Eurozone crisis push the US economy back into recession? How will the Fed respond to the threats faced by the US economy?
Arlene Kish, Senior Principal Economist, will discuss what is behind the expected sluggishness of the Canadian economy after two consecutive quarter of soft growth. Will the pullback in the government sector keep any advances in the economy at bay? What is the new path for the Canadian dollar given the downturn in energy prices? With the Bank of Canada's recently announcing no change in interest rates, when do we expect a hike?
Paul Edelstein is the Director of Financial Economics for IHS Global Insight. His responsibilities include US macroeconomic and financial market analysis, Federal Reserve analysis, and interest rate and credit market forecasting. He earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Michigan and a B.Sc. in Policy Analysis and Management from Cornell University. Paul is a member of the National Association for Business Economics (NABE) and the Boston Security Analysts Society (BSAS).

Kish is responsible for the Canadian short-term and long-term macroeconomic and provincial forecasts. Arlene has an M.A. in business economics from Wilfrid Laurier University and has extensive experience in the Canadian banking industry.
