Newbuild rig deliveries continue to add to fleet

The worldwide supply of mobile offshore drilling units has risen to 850 due to two newbuild units being delivered. However, the contracted rig count has fallen by one to 722, yielding a lower global fleet utilization rate of 84.9 percent.

The US Gulf of Mexico rig count is unchanged this week. With a supply of 110 and a contracted count of 79, the regional fleet utilization rate remains at 71.8 percent. Likewise, the South American offshore drilling rig supply and contracted counts are both holding steady at 135 and 108, respectively. The fleet utilization rate continues at 80.0 percent.

In the European/Mediterranean Sea region, the offshore drilling rig supply and contracted counts are the same as last week. With 113 out of 120 units under contract, the fleet utilization rate is 94.2 percent. Meanwhile, offshore West Africa, the number of drilling rigs has increased by one from last week, as has the contracted count. With a supply of 68 and a contracted count of 63, the adjusted fleet utilization rate is up slightly to 92.6 percent.

The Middle East is another region that has had no change to its supply or contracted rig count from last week. The supply of 138 rigs and contracted count of 118 yields a regional fleet utilization rate of 85.5 percent. In Asian/Australian waters, the mobile offshore drilling unit supply has risen by one to 151, and the contracted count has fallen by two to 125 units, resulting in a new fleet utilization rate of 82.8 percent.
