  • Gas-Fired Power Plants on Life Support
Profitability of gas plants is under pressure throughout the European Union owing to a “perfect storm” of low power demand, rising renewable generation, and high dispatch costs compared with coal. IHS CERA discusses the likely implications and outlook for gas-fired plants in Europe, estimating the amount of capacity at risk of retirement.

Looking Toward and Beyond 2020 Renewable Power Targets
The discussion over a post-2020 EU renewables policy is emerging with a view to design an appropriate framework in which the European renewables sector can continue to develop in the long term. IHS CERA provides a comprehensive picture of possible pathways for renewables policy and deployment.

Balancing Services in Europe: Growing Role amid Patchwork Playing Field
With Europe’s 2020 targets calling for an increase in intermittent generation and potential changes in demand patterns—from demand side management to electric vehicles—the role of balancing services is likely to grow in coming years. IHS CERA assesses the role of ancillary services—and especially balancing services—to manage short-term fluctuations in demand and supply, ensure generation reliability, and avoid large disruptions, particularly in a context of decarbonization.

Nuclear Stress Tests: No Closures but Improvements Needed All Around
The European Commission published its report on the results of the post-Fukushima safety review of Europe’s nuclear plants in October 2012. IHS CERA presents a synthesis of the self-assessments and peer reviews covering 145 plants in the European Union. While safety standards are high, and no closure of nuclear power plants is required, there is not a single plant that meets all the safety criteria but improvements are needed at every nuclear plant in the European Union.

Coal’s New Helper: How Much Biomass in Coal Power Plants?
Is cofiring of biomass in coal-fired power generation and coal-to-biomass conversion an emerging European trend, or a short-lived, market-specific experiment? IHS CERA analysis of government policies and market circumstances demonstrates some key uncertainties surrounding the scale-up of biomass use in the coal sector across Europe.
