2012 Markets: A pause in growth? Only in the West
This year is proving something of a challenge for perennial optimists – but only so far as the Atlantic market and producers are concerned. Elsewhere, in South America, in Africa and throughout Asia growth seems endless, whether from new coking coal theatres in Mozambique and Mongolia, or from a second dawn of production in Sumatra, from Queensland’s Galillee Basin or from new producers such as Madagascar, it’s an unending tale of opportunity and growth. And on the demand side, the return of expansion of Japan’s imports seems to be more than matched by China’s continuous expansion and the coming on line by a series of mega coal-importing power projects in India.
But the challenge to producers serving the US and European markets remains, whether they are in the metallurgical coal or steam coal business. European steel production will recover, but it is hard to say when or with what vigour. And its re-emergence from the effects of economic torpor will be into a world of tight emission controls and higher costs. The steam coal markets remain wretched in the US and with the exception of the sole glowing beacon of Turkey, little better elsewhere in Europe. German nuclear closures, to be followed by mine closures, offer some prospect of expansion, but the cloud of sulphur-enforced plant closures in the UK and elsewhere darkens the horizon.
