Dr. Bethune is responsible for high frequency US and Canadian economic analysis and forecasting and weekly North American financial reports as well as the Canadian dollar forecast. In addition, Brian develops and supports US and Canadian macroeconomic model resources for credit and financial markets, interest and borrowing rates, government debt and deficits, government expenditures and taxation. Brian also is responsible for IHS Global Insight's proprietary US leading economic indicator, and the probabilistic US business cycle forecasting model.
His areas of expertise include the US Economy, Canadian Economy, Federal Reserve; monetary policy, credit markets, the flow of funds, and the financial system; equity, bond, and currency markets; and government policies.
Bethuen has been the recipient of several major forecasting awards, including most recently the Wall Street Journal Dow Jones Market Watch forecast accuracy award, and several awards granted by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
Bethune is the author of several professional and academic articles that have appeared in publications such as the National Association for Business Economics Business Economics Journal, as well as in the Canadian Tax Journal.
Prior to joining IHS Global Insight, Bethune was Manager, Business Economics Group for Caterpillar Inc., and senior financial economist for the Bank of Montreal/Harris Bank Group. He has worked on special assignments at the World Trade Organization, Geneva, Switzerland, and the Institute of International Finance, Washington D.C.
Dr. Bethune holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in international economics from the Graduate Institute, University of Geneva, Switzerland. In 1982 he participated in the doctoral exchange program with the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University as a Mackenzie King Scholar.
