Over the last 30 years, the total number of protected areas worldwide has increased, on average, by 375,000 km per year. As E&P markets continue to shift and new prospect areas continue to decline, it becomes increasingly important to understand environmental and biodiversity issues and restrictions and the critical financial, operational and reputational risks associated with exploring possible new plays.

World Database
IHS has formed a partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) to provide PEPS subscribers with access to a range of biodiversity information on protected and sensitive areas found in the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA).

The WDPA is the only global database of marine and terrestrial protected areas displaying sites established by national governments and under international conventions or agreements. This continually updated database currently contains approximately 120,000 records.
