IEEE 1783 Defines Test Methods for Insulators in Sub-Freezing Conditions

This standard defines test methods for insulators during sub-zero weather conditions. It includes test methods for substation and line insulators at distribution and transmission voltage levels.

The test methods detail measures to reproduce the environmental and insulator parameters that influence the risk of flashover in freezing conditions. Statistical methods are also recommended to assist in the insulator selection process.

The standard was sponsored by the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Society.

According to IEEE-SA, the guide consolidates the information learned in the past decade and recommends reproducible test methods for selecting adequate insulators.
