ASTM Int'l to Develop Standard for Limestone Use in Flue Gas Desulfurization - ASTM WK2012

Power generation companies using or considering the use of wet limestone flue gas desulfurization and suppliers of limestone to the power industry would be the primary users of ASTM WK20129 - Test Method for Evaluating Limestone for Use in Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization Applications by Reactivity, said ASTM International.
According to Michael Kroc, Analytical Investigator, Specialty Minerals Inc., and chair, Subcommittee C07.05, environmental concerns and issues of competition have driven the increased interest in flue gas desulfurization applications.
The proposed standard will be a unified test method that will provide an alternative to the use of vendor-specific methods. "[ASTM] WK20129 should allow users to objectively compare the suitability of different sources and select the one that best meets their needs," said Kroc.
Kroc said that the subcommittee is interested in engaging FGD equipment manufacturers and consultants.
Topics to be addressed by the task group for the proposed standard include sample particle size, acid type and strength, pH, temperature, reference limestone and test measurement type and results reported.
ASTM WK20129 is under development by Subcommittee C07.05 on Chemical Tests, part of ASTM International Committee C07 on Lime.
