PHMSA Proposes Standards to Reduce Gas Pipeline Corrosion
December 30, 2005
The proposed rulemaking would require new or replaced pipelines to be designed and constructed to mitigate internal corrosion. At a minimum, such pipelines should
- Be configured to reduce the opportunity for liquids to accumulate.
- Be equipped with effective liquid removal features.
- Be able to accommodate corrosion monitoring devices at locations with the greatest potential for internal corrosion.
PHMSA believes designing and constructing pipelines with internal corrosion control in mind will ease integrity management assessment and simplify pipeline operations and maintenance.
According to PHMSA, in 2003 and 2004 internal corrosion in gas pipelines caused $19.8 million in property damage.
