Local sources suggest that Ophir Energy has made a gas discovery with new-field wildcat Bythos 1, its second of a possible four-well exploration program in offshore Block R. The permit covers 2,681 sq km in the Niger Delta Basin, west-southwest of Bioko Island in water depths ranging from 1,200 to over 2,000m. According to Ophir, Block R lies in an area of the Niger Delta characterized by compressional toe-thrusts and multiple reservoir fairways. The company has identified six prospective features with a gross unrisked resource potential of over 2.5 billion barrels.

Drilling Wire on the Web
The company’s first well on the Fortuna prospect was plugged and abandoned dry in early November 2008. The Premium Drilling “Deep Venture” D/S then moved to drill Bythos 1, a fault-dependent four-way dip closure prospect of mid-Miocene age. The interests in Block R are shared between GEPetrol, administrative operator (20%), and Ophir, technical operator (80%). The company has since completed a third exploration well, Lykos 1, as a gas discovery but has yet to comment on the results.
