Nike said it joined the Coalition for Responsible Transportation, a group that advocates for policies and public/private partnerships that encourage the use of cleaner truck technologies in port communities in order to reduce the air quality impacts of drayage trucking.
"By choosing LNG to fuel their trucks, Nike has clearly recognized that natural gas is the environmentally preferred alternative to reducing air emissions in the Los Angeles region and throughout the country," said Bill Cooper, executive director of CLNG.
"This is a prime example of why California needs LNG. If California expects to improve its air quality and meet the state's growing energy demand, bringing more natural gas to the state in the form of LNG is the most environmentally friendly answer, not only for fueling truck fleets, but for generating electricity, heating homes and powering industry," Cooper said.
Nike estimates the new LNG-fueled trucks, which haul goods throughout the region approximately 285,000 miles per year, will emit 18% less carbon dioxide (CO2), 88% less nitrogen oxide (NOx) and 96% less particulate matter per mile when compared with their diesel counterparts.
