DOE Solicits Feedback on Draft of Algal Biofuels Roadmap

In December 2008, DOE conducted the National Algal Biofuels Technology Roadmap workshop to assess the current state of algae technology and to determine the next steps toward commercialization of algal biofuel processes.
The results of the workshop provided a basis for the National Algal Biofuels Technical Roadmap draft.
The roadmap, prepared by a working group commissioned by DOE, will address the development of an algae R&D focus within the DOE's Office of the Biomass Program. The purpose of this RFI is to solicit feedback from stakeholders and the research community.
According to the DOE, responses to the RFI should address one or more of the following questions:
- What areas omitted by the roadmap would be important in defining R&D needs as they pertain to algae biology, algae cultivation, algae processing (harvesting and dewatering), extraction, fuel conversion and fuel end-use?
- Are there any additional key areas that should be included or any areas that need further elaboration?
- Are there errors or misrepresentations of any information that need to be addressed?
- Is there overrepresentation of certain barrier areas relative to other areas that warrant editing?
Responses to the RFI will be reviewed and considered for incorporation into the finalized roadmap for public release, according to the DOE.
Responses in formulation of program strategies will also be considered. The DOE will not pay for information and there is no guarantee there will be a funding opportunity announcement as a result of this RFI.
