DOE Issues Fuel, Feedstock Flexibility Power Solicitation

This funding opportunity supports ITP program goals and objectives to drive a 25% reduction in U.S. industrial energy intensity by 2017 and an 18% reduction in U.S. carbon intensity by 2012, according to the DOE.
Proposed R&D should focus on one of the following areas:
- Fuel flexibility.
- Feedstock flexibility in the chemical industry.
- Clean distributed generation.
Program Areas of Interest
Fuel Flexibility
Cost shared applications are being sought for application-specific replacement of natural gas as a heating or prime mover power source. This can be accomplished through the use of industrial waste streams, organic waste or post-industrial/commercial waste such as municipal solid waste and tire-derived fuel.
Feedstock Flexibility in the Chemical Industry
Research emphasis shall be placed on waste or other underused abundant and low cost streams. This may include but is not limited to underused refinery streams, coke, coal and biomass sources.
Clean Distributed Generation
Distributed generation (DG) is the production of electricity at or close to the point of use. Combined heat and power (CHP) is a system that involves recovery of waste heat from electricity generation to form useful energy such as steam. CHP also is the production of electricity and thermal energy in a single, integrated system.
Cost shared applications are being sought in this area to increase CHP use for industrial and commercial applications with an emphasis on projects, which have the flexibility to use renewable and opportunity fuels, according to the funding opportunity.

Approximately $4 million in total funding is available in fiscal year 2008 for new awards with an additional $6 million expected to be available for awards under this announcement in out years, said the DOE.
One to five awards will be issued for each area of interest with individual awards of $500,000 to $2 million.
