IHS Sponsored Aberdeen Report Indicates Companies Still at Risk of Environmental Non-Compliance
Key to Compliance Depends Upon Systematic, Repeatable Processes
Englewood, Colo., October 24, 2006 — IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), a leading global provider of critical technical information, decision-support tools, and strategic services, sponsored research by Aberdeen Group that reports on the present risk status of companies regarding product compliance. The report, The Product Compliance Benchmark Report: Protecting the Environment, Protecting Profits, examines how companies have addressed compliance issues and what types of processes are most effective in ensuring compliance.
“Several recommendations resulted from the study,” said the report’s author, Jim Brown, Aberdeen Vice President of Global Product Innovation and Engineering. “Auditing content to address potential variability and data inaccuracy in supply chains is critical. Companies also need to adopt proactive compliance strategies that standardize and centralize compliance processes so that they can leverage their efforts across the entire enterprise.”The European Union’s (EU) Restriction on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, effective July 1, 2006, requires companies who sell their electrical and electronic products in the EU to limit or eliminate several hazardous substances in those products. Similar legislation has been passed or is pending in other countries throughout the world, including China, Japan, Canada and parts of the U.S. Since manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their products comply with RoHS mandates, it is critical that they have processes in place that support all compliance requirements. Non-compliance can result in the inability to sell in global markets, blocked shipments, excess and obsolete inbound and outbound inventories, and associated revenue costs. Scott Wilson, Compliance Solutions Strategist, IHS, agrees. “We find that to be successful in ensuring compliance, companies need to develop sustainable, repeatable environmental use models that allow them to obtain the necessary information, manage that information effectively and document their compliance with confidence. Companies that align their internal procedures to meet legal requirements will lower their compliance risk and thrive in this era of expanded environmental regulations.”
IHS offers comprehensive content, services and tools designed to ensure environmental compliance including electronic component databases, consulting and data collection services, compliance reporting software and customized enterprise compliance systems. As part of its efforts to address compliance issues, IHS will host a free Web seminar on October 25, 2006 focusing on due diligence for environmental compliance. Discussion will include the development of a reliable and sustainable due diligence program to meet evolving and diversified environmental compliance regulations while assessing environmental compliance exposure and readiness.
